2. About the Program

  • Program Structure:
    • The program includes a full one-year MSc in Development Policy and Politics, followed by a one-year internship.
    • The internship is divided into two parts: six months with the International Development Department (IDD) working on research, and six months with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in London, participating in various initiatives and forums.

    • The curriculum emphasizes the political dimensions of development, providing students with skills in political analysis and a deep understanding of governance and policy.
    • The program benefits from a multinational student body, enriching discussions with diverse perspectives and expertise.

3. Curriculum

  • Compulsory Modules:
    • International Development (20 credits)
    • Development Policy and Politics (20 credits)
    • Dissertation (60 credits) – Focus on a topic of interest, potentially involving overseas fieldwork.
  • Elective Modules (Choose one):
    • Governance and State-building (20 credits)
    • Democracy, Dictatorship and Development (20 credits)
  • Optional Modules:
    • Choose from any module across the School of Government or from another school/college with Programme Director approval.

4. Scholarship Details

  • Coverage:
    • Full tuition fee.
    • Airfare to and from the United Kingdom and visa costs.
    • Monthly stipend of £950 for 18 months.
    • Arrival allowance of £950.
    • The remaining six months of the internship funded directly by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

5. Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Requirements:
    • A first-class Honours degree or equivalent from an approved university.
  • Age and Residency:
    • Applicants must be under 30 years of age.
    • Must be African nationals domiciled or permanent residents in an African country, with preference given to those living in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Language Proficiency:
    • Good written and spoken English. Non-native speakers must provide evidence of proficiency (IELTS level 6.5 or TOEFL 580/93).
